I’ve been thinking lately about the internet’s intrusion into our lives. It craves our attention, calling to us every minute of the day with something new. This unread message and that unread post. Articles and news columns and reviews and reactions and status updates. It all gets a little overwhelming. And it never stops.
I love RSS. I have used it for a very long time to read new articles from websites I like.

Creating A Page Counter for Gemini Remember the page hit counters popular on 90s websites? I find gemini sites take me back to that era, so I was thinking it would be fun to recreate that on my gemini site. Using CGI it is pretty simple, and I will show you how.
I was thinking about how I wanted to do it. The easiest thing to do is just have a number stored somewhere and increment it by one when the page loads.

Open your boxes. YOU get a credit freeze! YOU get a credit freeze! YOU get a credit freeze! (Apologies, Oprah)
Note: This post deals with info specific to the USA credit reporting system, but the general ideas here can also be used for other countries if they have similar reporting systems.
Yeah so I got another notice of a data breach involving my personal info, one of several in the last few years.

Old Computer Challenge Days 5 to 7- In Which Life Interrupts

Well, life happens. I had a family emergency which took up almost all of my free time for the remainder of the OCC week. I did still use my OCC setup to just check my email at night when I got home.
However, during the day between being with family, travelling, shopping and keeping house I had no time for casual computer use. I did need to use my phone’s web browser a few times to lookup things like store operating hours which was necessarily more important than sticking to the challenge.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my Day 1 adventures. Well the following days aren’t as exciting, I was sort of settled into the routine of doing email, listening to aNONradio, checking out the #oldcomputerchallenge IRC channel, Mastodon (via praetor’s brutaldon) and just general web browsing.
I wasn’t planning on doing any Youtubing but then I got an email that TesseracT dropped a new music video! So now I did have to figure out how to use youtube-dl to download the video.

Well it is here, July 10th day #1 of the old computer challenge.
After work I booted up my Lenovo IdeaPad with antiX (and rate limited to 512MB RAM and one core 777Mhz AMD E1 processor). I connected the HDMI port to a second monitor so I have plenty of space for windows. The monitors are arranged backwards though, I have to move the mouse past the left side of the left monitor to wrap over to the right monitor, and then move past the right side of the right monitor to wrap over to the left monitor.

Have you heard of the Old Computer Challenge running from July 10th to July 16th 2023? It is a chance to dig out your really old computers and relive those far gone days. The challenge is to use a computer with 512MB RAM and 1 CPU throttled to it’s lowest frequency.
Read more here: https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2023-06-04-old-computer-challenge-v3.html
My Plan So far this is my plan for equipment. I don’t have a really old computer so I will need to throttle some not-so-old equipment.

Overview Did you know that you can have a website for free hosted by Codeberg? You can also use your own website domain name (but you will probably need to pay for that). All you need to know is a little bit of how gitea works and a way to create a static website. You can write one by hand in plain HTML, or use a static site generator like Hugo or Jekyll.

I took a road trip this weekend to be at a live baseball game, and it was so great after not really going anywhere for two years. This post isn’t about the game, but about the time driving to and back from the game. I decided to use the time to explore some new metal bands. I have been getting into more symphonic metal, a change from my more standard fare of classic and prog rock.

Lately I have become more interested in smaller networks and alternatives to the standard world wide web. This website is a part of that journey, joining a tilde pubnix is a great way to join a smaller group of enthusiasts which have no ties to corporate gaols and persuits. There are so many different projects out there, and getting started in any of them can sometimes be a challenge. Hopefully I can provide some tips here to get you pointed in the right direction.

I have been running the /e/ Android ROM on a Nexus 5X phone for about 3 years now. Before that I ran CopperheadOS before that project almost literally blew up. I love /e/, and I want to stick with it. Do I need a new phone? Not really. There have just been two things recently that have taxed it enough that I have thought about upgrading.

First is I installed Briar again.

Trying wireguard on Manjaro Phosh I use wireguard as my VPN, so I would like to get it working on Manjaro Phosh for the PinePhone.
I ran: [$ sudo pacman -S wireguard-tools]
Then: [$ wg-quick up wg0-pinemanjaro]
Result:
[#] resolvconf -a wg0-pinemanjaro -m 0 -x
/usr/bin/wg-quick: line 32: resolvconf: command not found
Fine, then: [$ sudo pacman -S resolvconf]
Two options: 1) openresolv 2) systemd-resolvconf
Choose 2
Run: [$ sudo wg-quick up wg0-pinemanjaro]

Thoughts on why to use Manjaro Phosh on the PinePhone

I ordered the Braveheart edition of the PinePhone last year and it arrived in February. At the time the operating systems for it were very rough, for example even if you shut the phone down completely it would still drain the battery to 0% overnight. Many basic settings had to be configured through the terminal such as timezone, setting a new password, etc.
Since that time there have been major improvement and we are getting closer to having a device which can be used as a daily phone.

CalDAV and CardDAV on Manjaro Phosh There is no built in account option for CalDAV/CardDAV yet. But if you install evolution, that app has capability to do those. Add a new calendar and a new address book using the specific URLs for your mail or NextCloud provider. Then once those are synced you should see those entries in the standard Gnome Calendar and Contacts apps.
Also if you run ‘scale-to-fit evolution’ that will make windows scaled better for the phone screen, but buttons are really small now.

Compiling Kristall for MacOS I was looking for a good gemini browser for MacOS and couldn’t find anything pre-built, so thought I would try to find one I could build from source. Here I found a list of reviews for several gemini clients, and I decided to just try one. Kristall looked like a good option for MacOS since it was Qt based.
So I finally did it after 2.5 hours.

I am always impressed with the quality of these kits, it came with all the tools needed (plus extra) and the instructions were perfect. This phone should live on for another several years.
